How to Feng Shui with Houseplants, Based on Your Astrological Sign by NICOLETTA RICHARDSON

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese art that’s all about finding a balance and harmony in your surrounding environment. It’s no simple act, but the very basics include decluttering, softening features, bringing air into the space, and—one of my personal favorites—introducing more plants.

When creating good feng shui, there are five elements that are crucial to incorporate: fire, water, earth, metal, and wood. According to feng shui expert Clara Leung, who runs her own business Clara’s Green House and has sold over 3,000 plants on Facebook Marketplace, plants are an excellent representation of the wood element.

“Wood is very likely to have something to do with the color green, and together, they convey the essence of this wonderful thing called ‘life’ itself,” Leung tells Apartment Therapy. “While I strongly believe that live houseplants work in endlessly amazing ways that we cannot see with our naked eyes, they also serve as excellent visual reminders of our daily pursuit of the maximization of positivity and happiness in each of our own lives.”

Leung sees big connections between feng shui and astrology, and says viewing it through this lens can help you understand when the practice is needed most. For example, if Leung is an Aquarius and her roommate is a Taurus—two signs that are known to be incompatible—she says that “adding feng shui houseplants and elements can reduce tension and increase positive energy in the house.” That isn’t to say you always need a conflict of interest—many of Leung’s clients are simply strong believers of astrology and want to incorporate it more into their home—but understanding your compatibility as signs with those you share space with helps determine the need for feng shui.

In order to help you practice feng shui with plants in your own home, Leung went through each astrological sign and recommended the best houseplant to create this desired harmony and balance.

Aries (March 21 — April 19): Aloe Vera

With a courageous spirit that is often spontaneous, Aries should feng shui with an aloe vera houseplant. Leung described this plant as embodying brave and strong characteristics, both of which complement Aries’ determined nature.

Taurus (April 20 — May 20): Money Tree

A Taurus is known for being practical and stable with their hardworking ethos and clever way of thinking. Leung matched Taurean’s energy with the money tree, officially known as the Pachira aquatic tree, that contributes loyalty and financial prosperity.

Gemini (May 21 — June 20): Monstera Deliciosa (Split Leaf)

Geminis are known for their optimism and ability to adapt to new environments, which is due to their love for socializing. The split leaf represents positivity and happiness, according to Leung—in other words, a Gemini’s actual twin.

Cancer (June 21 — July 22): Jade

Cancers are in touch with their emotions and are extremely honest—but get on their bad side, and they will hold a grudge. As a succulent, jade plants love to soak up water, and they will visually let you know when it’s time for feeding (there’s that honesty). Leung also describes them as careful and protective.

Leo (July 23 — August 22): Ponytail Palm

Leos are full of joy and love to show enthusiasm whenever they get the chance. The ponytail palm projects similar good energy, with a spring in its leaves that projects happiness. Leung also emphasizes the ponytail palm’s characteristic of being imaginative, a trait that Leos love to express to others.

Virgo (August 23 — September 22): Rubber Tree

As an earth sign, Virgos are known for being reliable, responsible, and—quite frankly—perfectionists. A rubber plant is the ideal houseplant for feng shui in a Virgos home, according to Leung, which has good energy that supports “finance” and “responsibility.”

Libra (September 23 — October 22): Monstera Adansonii

Libras can be described as fair-minded, cooperative, easy-going, and gracious, with an overarching air of romanticism. The Monstera Adansonii—also known as the five holes plant for obvious reasons—complements this sign with its happy and pleasurable vibes.

Scorpio (October 23 — November 21): Dracaena

With a mysterious air about them, Scorpios are known to be extremely observant and have an intense emotional depth to them. Leung mentioned that a dracaena is a compatible match for feng shui because of its protective yet happy traits.

Sagittarius (November 22 — December 21): Alocasia

Sagittarians enjoy their independency and practice it through their global mindset. Often taking an idealistic point of view, a Sagittarius can turn to an alocasia to feng shui their home, which has protective and careful characteristics to help a Sag stay grounded.

Capricorn (December 22 — January 19): Bonsai

This sign is all about hard work. A Capricorn’s ambition and determination to achieve goals is so intense that it can be perceived by others as stubborn. According to Leung, a bonsai projects seriousness energy and financial prosperity that supports this lifestyle.

Aquarius (January 20 — February 18): Marble Queen Pothos

Aquarians are humanitarians who think outside the box, with an easy going personality that brews up inventive ideas. The Marble Queen Pothos, flowing freely from its planter in every which way, brings good energy and happiness to a space.

Pisces (February 19 — March 20): Benjamina Ficus Tree

As a water sign, Pisces are emotional dreamers with their heads often in the clouds. They channel their energy in various forms of artistic forms, and the Bejamina ficus tree fosters this creativity with art-minded, motivational characteristics.

Nicole Kidman delivered one of her greatest performances in an eerie reincarnation drama by Beatrice Loayza

Not sure if I saw this back then, but stumbled upon this article and for sure am going to watch now. Thought you might be interested in it as well. Calleen

Birth (2004)

Birth, the second film by Under The Skindirector Jonathan Glazer, plumbs the depths of grief and love with an unsettling hypothetical: What if a young boy showed up at your doorstep claiming to be your reincarnated dead husband? And what if you believed him? While the film doesn’t quite succeed in balancing art-house ambiguity with torrid melodrama, its mashup of dreamy, high-society elegance and psychological violence nonetheless has a lingering effect. Co-scripted by Jean-Claude Carrière, Birth in part recalls the haut-bourgeois twilight zones of the French screenwriter’s regular collaborator, surrealism pioneer Luis Buñuel. And as in some of Buñuel’s best work, the surreal premise isn’t really the point so much as the spark for a spectacular fallout—and arguably Nicole Kidman’s best performance to date.

Donning a Mia Farrow or Jean Seberg-esque pixie cut, Kidman plays Anna, a wealthy widow living in the Upper East Side with her new fiancé, Joseph (Danny Huston), following the death of her husband Sean 10 years prior. The couple’s engagement party is interrupted by the arrival of young “Sean” (Cameron Bright), a boy with penetrating blue eyes that seem to contain passion and wisdom beyond their years. No one takes him seriously, of course, when he claims with startling matter-of-factness that Anna cannot marry another man because she is married to him. Yet over the course of several days, he reveals intimate knowledge of Sean’s life—the very spot in Central Park where he died, the sofa on which he and Anna used to have sex. Might Sean be trapped inside this small, pale body? Anna, still traumatized by Sean’s indifferent treatment of her in life, and still grieving his death nearly a decade later, is all too willing to believe the impossible—not just that her husband has returned, but that he has returned full of love for her.

An unexpectedly tidy resolution somewhat derails the central love story, but Glazer wrings more out of Anna’s emotional journey than just romance. It’s never clear what she does for a living, if anything. She’s a housewife without a husband, a porcelain doll living in luxury under the thumb of her mother (Lauren Bacall, characteristically chic but cruel) and a fiancé whom she does not love. Her denial easily buckles as little Sean’s displays of devotion intensify, his refusal to stop bothering her skirting the line between bratty and heroically romantic. There’s a bravado sequence when Anna attends the opera and the camera slowly pushes in from a wide shot to Kidman’s face as it registers dozens of conflicting emotions: anguish and ecstasy, grief and wonder. (The scene recalls the radical close-ups of Maria Falconetti in The Passion Of Joan Of Arc or of Anna Karina in Vivre Sa Vie.) Things get weird when Anna starts spending time with the boy, selfishly keeping him from his working-class parents, themselves deeply affected by their son’s bizarre obsession. A risqué bathtub scene has the supposed husband and wife sitting naked across from each in the water; there’s no touching, but stillness and silence flood the room with palpable, indefensible desire.

Birth received mixed reviews at the time of its release, but has entered a phase of reappraisal since the success of Under The Skin cued more folks into Glazer’s particular brand of unearthly eroticism. In the film’s prologue, a long tracking shot follows adult Sean as he jogs through a snowy Central Park in the final moments before his fatal stroke. We can’t quite make out his face. The rest of the movie hinges on the possibility of an afterlife; its saturated color palette and uncanny, open spaces seem to point to supernatural forces at work. But Glazer strategically obscures Sean’s identity in these first minutes to destabilize the notion of reincarnation. How can we trust this boy who claims to be Sean when we don’t even know who Sean is in the first place? Glazer builds an afterlife, or at least the semblance of an afterlife, from the stuff of Anna’s desire—desire unfulfilled and unreturned, desire battered by grief, desperation, and jealousy. It’s an afterlife cobbled together from the memory of what could have been.

A Beginner’s Guide to Astrological Rising Signs and BY EMILY SIMONE

What They Mean Think your sun sign is the only important astrological term you need to know? Actually, ascendant signs are also integral to understanding our personalities. Here’s how to find your rising sign — and why it matters.

As astrology has entered mainstream conversations, more people are going beyond their sun signs for knowledge about their birth charts. That means folks are taking an interest in their moon signs, rising signs, and more natal chart information beyond those, what many call “the big three.”

But even some who are aware of their rising signs may not know exactly what it means for them, so that’s what we’re here to explain: what exactly a rising sign is, how to find it, and a basic breakdown of how your rising sign may be expressed in your life.

What to Know About Rising Signs

The sun spends about 30 days in each sign and the moon spends roughly two and a half days in each sign. The elusive rising sign is so-called because it denotes which sign is on the horizon at the time of birth. This is why astrology requires a precise birth time rather than an estimate to create a proper natal chart. (For the longest time, we had the wrong birth time for my sister and thought she was a Sagittarius rising, when she’s actually a Pisces rising. Now it makes so much more sense.)

The sun is your deepest self, the moon is your inner emotional landscape, the rising sign (or ascendant) is both your outlook on the world and the first impression you give to others. At a first meeting, job interview, or party, people will perceive you as your rising sign. As they get to know you better, they come to see the rest of your chart. This can happen at different paces depending on the relationship.

The rising sign is often called “the public mask” or “front door.”

This type of sign is also often called “the public mask” or “front door.” The rising also denotes your ruling planet, which carries the energy of that sign. This planet carries extra meaning in your chart. When we’re looking at signs, houses, and planets, we are also always looking for the ruler of that sign, house, or planet. So there’s a lot more to a birth chart than your sun, moon, and rising signs. If you find you don’t identify with those, just remember there are other factors at play.

How to Find Your Rising Sign

To find your rising sign, it’s crucial to know your exact time of birth. Don’t just rely on your parents’ memories. Every state in the U.S. formats birth certificates differently but requesting your “long-form birth certificate” will ensure that you get your birth time.

Once you have your birth time, most astrologers swear by Astro.com to create a proper chart. Not only will its tried-and-true system calculate your sun, moon, and rising signs, it will provide snippets of a free personal portrait with some horoscopes too. There are also apps available, including Costar and TimePassages, that calculate birth charts using the same information, but you can’t go wrong with Astro.com.

A Deep Dive Into Every Rising Sign

Astrology is a nuanced topic. If you find that descriptions of your rising sign don’t resonate with you, please keep in mind that it’s just a tiny piece of the puzzle. A full rundown of your rising sign includes not just the sign but also the house your ruling planet is in, and other nuances in your personal chart, such as where the planets are in relation to one another. There are infinite possibilities and combinations, but the following breaks down rising signs in their basic forms, without any of this additional information.

Aries

If you’re an Aries rising, chances are you come off as brave, opinionated, and independent. You have a very strong and commanding presence, and may even be seen as intimidating. You are the fierce warrior of the zodiac. Being the first sign, you lead the cavalry. As the first fire sign of the zodiac, you are intensely competitive and view the world as a series of competitions. Aries, you are a trailblazer who leaps before you look and asks for forgiveness, not permission. You also act on your instincts, which are usually spot-on.

Taurus

If you’re Taurus rising, it’s likely you give off fierce, dependable, and strong-willed vibes. But you also have a softer side. You enjoy the good things in life, including beautiful clothes, fine food, and massages. Taurus sometimes gets pigeonholed as materialistic, and while you do like to surround yourself with gorgeous finery, you’re also hardworking enough that you’ve earned a bit of luxury. You’re the first earth sign and you represent earthiness in its purest form. This means you like being active and creative with your hands — for you, this could mean gardening, cooking, knitting, or even the challenge of finding a creative new makeup look.

Gemini

If you’re Gemini rising, people likely perceive you as talkative, bright, and curious. You are probably the social media expert of your group, with your fellow air sign, Aquarius. You are always doing 18 things at once and working on multiple projects. Being one of the double signs, like Libra and Pisces, you can sometimes come off as two different people, but that’s not a bad thing. We need your boundless energy and inexhaustible resources. Your highly creative mind can spit out ideas a mile a minute. Sometimes you might get overwhelmed by the desire to do everything, but unfortunately doing everything at once is impossible — try sticking to one or two things you really care about and focus on the rest of your list later.

Cancer

If you’re Cancer rising, then warm, nurturing, and sensitive may be at the top of the list for those who describe you. You are likely seen as the mother among your close friends. You are a homebody and deeply value your family connections, whether blood or chosen. You like your routine — after all, you’ve taken time and care to establish yourself and make things exactly the way you want them to be. You might also be the person people come to with problems because you know how to hold space for people.

Leo

If you’re Leo rising, people probably think of you as confident, vibrant, and fun. You have a flair for the dramatic, and people immediately notice when you walk in the room. You are also extremely creative, whether you express yourself with a vlog, a gorgeous social media feed, or through creative outfits and makeup. Seeing you live your best life inspires others to do the same. Leo season is the summer and you carry that carefree, sunny spirit with you. Leo is also known as the child of the zodiac. Like children, you live in the moment, but can also be a little demanding. Not everyone can keep up with your fiery energy.

Virgo

If you’re Virgo rising, people who meet you may describe you as organized, put together, and reliable. Friends often go to you in a crisis. You know how to deal with things in order of importance and are a natural caregiver. Being an earth sign, you are also connected to nature and probably love animals. You know this planet is precious and that we have to be cognizant of how we use its resources.

Libra

If you’re Libra rising, those who come into contact with you likely think of you as pleasant, sweet, and charming — whether or not that’s what’s going on below the surface. Since Libra is an air sign, you are social, enjoy being around others, and collaborating on projects. You may have heard that Libras are indecisive, and while this may be true it comes with good intentions because you generally want everyone to be happy. Though you want the best possible outcome for the most people, it’s important to recognize that’s not always possible. Note that Libra is the diplomat of the zodiac. Makes sense, doesn’t it?Most Popular

Scorpio

If you’re Scorpio rising, you may come off as mysterious, quiet, and alluring. It’s not always a sexually charged charm, although it can be. Most of the time there’s so much going on behind that cool, pristine face, and people want to know more. Rising Scorpios are intense, and you have your reasons. You’ve likely had some experiences that have caused you to put up your guard, especially if you have other Scorpio influence in your chart, and it may take time to get to know you.

Sagittarius

If you’re Sagittarius rising, people may describe you as fun, vivacious, and bright. You have a zest for life that’s contagious and are known as the optimist of the zodiac. The glass is always half full for you. This may be a bit difficult right now, and your serious side may be coming out as a result. You are also known as a wise teacher and seeker of truth. You are outspoken, opinionated, and say what other people aren’t saying. You can often be quite blunt and sometimes it backfires.

Capricorn

If you’re Capricorn rising, you come off as mature, organized, and driven. You are always put together and prepared. You strive for greatness, and you expect a lot of yourself and of others. You scale unscalable heights and often do things others wouldn’t dream of. However, given that Capricorn is an earth sign, you are also grounded in your quest for greatness. You work within the system and then defy expectations.

Aquarius

If you’re an Aquarius rising, you may be perceived as intellectual, innovative, and a humanitarian. Some think the “aqua” in Aquarius means you’re a water sign, but Aquarius is actually the third air sign (along with Gemini and Libra) and a symbol of the water bearer. This sign has much more to do with community and being part of the collective; it’s about sharing the water, not being the water. You’re also known for being very individualistic, and it’s possible to see a rising Aquarius coming a mile away given your turquoise pixie cut, your razor scooter, or maybe you’re just singing at the top of your lungs as you walk down the street. In any case, you stand out and you march to the beat of your own drum.

Pisces

If you’re Pisces rising, people likely describe you as dreamy, compassionate, with your head a bit in the clouds. That’s because sometimes you have a deep connection to other worlds whether you know it or not. Pisces is known as the psychic of the zodiac and since it’s the last sign, it carries all the other signs in it. Therefore, you are intrinsically linked to all of humanity. When someone meets you for the first time, you may seem like you’re not paying attention and your mind is elsewhere. That may be partially true, but you are also taking in everything, including the person’s words, their body language, and underlying emotions.

Top Haunted Places In The World That Have The Spookiest Story by Shruti Mukherjee

Here is a list of five of the top haunted places in the world that have inspired some of the spookiest stories. Read on to know more about these spooky places.

Paranormal activity, ghosts and demons have always been a fascinating subject for people. There are tons of places all over the world where such activities have been reported by the locals and many of them have been warded off from human visitation for their deathly characteristics. Here is a list of the top five haunted places from around the world:

Poveglia Island near Venice, Italy

Poveglia Island is situated some hours from Venice. It used to be a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague. In the early 20th century, the island was also used as an insane asylum where horrifying medical experiments are said to have been conducted. It has remained uninhabited since 1968 but home to tortured souls of those who died here. Ghosts hunters have claimed that this spot has a massive amount of paranormal activity and so it is one of the top haunted places in the world. Although it is illegal to visit the island, one can see it and the hospital from the beaches of Lido.

Bhangarh Fort near Delhi, India

Situated at a distance of two hundred miles from the country’s capital, Delhi, Bhangarh Fort is an abandoned fortress in the middle of the desert. According to legends, a sorcerer cursed the place after being rudely rejected by the princess. Since then the place has remained uninhabited. Tourists are discouraged from going there, especially in the late hours, due to tons of paranormal activities surrounding the fort, making it one of the top haunted places in the world.

Hoia Baciu Forest in Cluj-Napoca, Romania

The forest is situated in Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania and the locals call it the ‘Bermuda Triangle’ of Romania. They say that the forest has possessed an evil presence for centuries haunted by the souls of the peasants who were murdered here. People have gone missing from here and there have also been UFO sightings. Lights and unexplained electrical phenomenon have frequently occurred here making it one of the top haunted places. The paranormal activity is centred in a barren circle on a plateau deep inside the forest where no plant ever grows.

On a side note – I am SO fascinated by the Hoia Baciu Forest. However, even if given the chance I don’t think I’d visit. I think there’s FAR more going on there than just ghosts. Scary place. Calleen

The Queen Mary in Long Beach California, USA

The RMS Queen Mary had spent 30 years at the sea before being permanently docked in Long Beach, California. During her tenure, there have been as much as 50 recorded deaths on board making her one of the top haunted places in the world. It has now been turned into a hotel but the engine room is still a hotbed for most of the paranormal activity on the ship.

Isla de las Munecas (Island of the Dolls) in Xochimilco, Mexico

The Island of the Dolls, as the name suggests, has hundreds of dolls hanging from the trees or scattered on the grass and is one of the top haunted places in the world. As the legend goes, a girl drowned in the canal near the island and sometime later, dolls began to wash ashore. The island’s only inhabitant and caretaker for 50 years, Julian, hung the dolls from the trees to appease the spirit but later he was found drowned in the same spot as the girl. Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site, tourists now go there to hang dolls and keep the spirit appeased.

9 Spooky Airbnbs to Rent If You Dare to be Scared by Lesley Chen

For some people, it’s not enough to just celebrate Halloween, they want to live Halloween, ghosts and all. What better way to embrace the spirit of the season than rooming with some actual spirits? Even if you don’t believe in paranormal activity, these nine Airbnbs definitely feel haunted, and some previous guests have reported spine-tingling experiences. Go ahead and book a stay and sleep tight — if you dare.

Cisco Post Office, Cisco, UT: The city of Cisco, in eastern Utah, was founded in the 1880s but has all but been abandoned and now is a ghost town. You can stay in the original post office (closed in the 1990s), which has WiFi but no running water, and few (at least living) neighbors — as of the late 2010s, there is only one self-declared resident in Cisco.

The Haunted House, Penetanguishene, Canada: This stately Victorian dates back to 1885, when it was inhabited by lumber baron Charles Beck. As lore goes, when Beck died, his inheritance was split evenly among his nine children but his eldest daughter only received $1. Strange spiritual occurrences have been reported since.

The Stroud House, Wake Forest, NC: Built in the 1940s, the Stroud House has some interesting features like sinks in every bedroom, shiplapped ceilings, and… possible ghosts. Family, friends, and guests of the hosts have reported lights turning on and off, shadowy figures, glowing orbs in the living room, and a music box that plays itself. But don’t worry, there have been no reported incidents in the guest bedroom — yet.

Inspiration House, Oberlin, OH: Inspiration House is used as an art and learning retreat and meditation space, and if you are looking for a spiritual experience, this is your place. The house is suspected to be haunted, and the first floor display room, which is filled with paranormal phenomena, is only open by request because many guests found it too “creepy” (two words: porcelain dolls).

The Enslin Mansion, Troy, NY: Ghouls just wanna have fun at this historic mansion, which has been used for both filming and paranormal investigations. According to the hosts, you will probably not see any spirits, but they do like to pull pranks like hiding keys from unsuspecting guests.

Gettysburg Historic Lookout House, Aspers, PA: Gettysburg is a town well-documented in history books, and soldiers on their way to the infamous battle there stayed in the attic of this house. Guests have reportedly seen a uniformed man standing in the corner of one bedroom and heard footsteps down the attic stairs. The house is filled with “oddities and antiques,” but a resident doberman named Scorch is also around to provide a little extra protection.

6 haunted houses that were once worth over $1 million by Erin McDowell

One of the most common horror movie plotlines involves innocent folks believing they’re getting an incredible deal on a new home, only to discover the place is haunted. However, what if that were to happen in real life?

Many homes are made only more valuable due to their haunted reputations. Some haunted houses become tourist attractions or even the subjects of big Hollywood horror franchises, attracting fans from across the world to their doors. However, other haunted houses have only been sold after dramatic price cuts.

We consulted Zillow records to determine the price history of some of America’s most notorious haunted houses. While they were all priced at more than $1 million at one point, they are all now worth considerably less, either due to changing housing markets, dilapidation, or perhaps even paranormal occurrences scaring away buyers.

Here are six haunted houses that were once worth millions, but are now worth much less.

Amityville Horror House, Long Island, NY

Popularly known as the Amityville Horror House, 112 Ocean Avenue still stands and is remembered as the site of a mass murder in which six people were killed. On the night of November 13, 1974, 23-year-old Ronald J. DeFeo Jr. shot and murdered his entire family while they slept. Those murdered included DeFeo’s two parents and his four siblings.

A little over a year after the murders, the Lutz family purchased the home for a reduced price of $80,000, on account of the house’s sinister reputation. They only lasted 28 days before moving out of the house, citing paranormal happenings like strange odors, green slime oozing out of the walls and keyholes, and cold spots appearing throughout the house.

Stepfather George Lutz also reported waking up at 3:15 AM every night, around the time DeFeo carried out the murders. Perhaps the strangest and most terrifying instances of all, the family claimed wife Kathy and sons Daniel and Christopher levitated off their beds.

The home, which underwent renovations and an address change in order to deter investigators or horror fans from visiting the property, was listed for $1.15 million in 2010. However, it sold for $950,000. In 2017, it sold for $605,000. It has been repeatedly cited as one of the most haunted places in America.

Franklin Castle, Cleveland, OH

Considered one of the most haunted places in Ohio, Franklin Castle in Cleveland has quite the paranormal history. The Victorian-style home was originally built in the 1880s by grocer-turned-banker Hannes Tiedemann. Many of Tiedemann’s close relatives died in the house, including his 15-year-old daughter, his mother, his wife, and three other of his infant children.

After Tiedemann died in 1908, it spent many years as a German cultural center and base for the German Socialist Party. However, throughout the 1960s, tales surfaced of paranormal activity within the castle walls. Visitors have claimed they’ve experienced electrical surges, heard crying babies, and even saw a mysterious woman emerging from black steam.

Rumors of heinous acts, like multiple murders and a mass shooting motivated by Nazi politics in the basement, have emerged. However, many of these claims are unsubstantiated. Regardless, people have claimed to see apparitions such as Tiedemann’s illegitimate daughter, who is rumored to have been hanged by her father, and his mistress, who he also allegedly killed with an axe.

In early 1984, Michael DeVinko, an actor and the last husband of Judy Garland, purchased Franklin Castle. DeVinko reportedly spent close to one million dollars renovating Franklin Castle before selling. However, fires occurred over the years that damaged the home. In 2011, it only sold for a mere $260,000, down from its $350,000 selling price in 1999. The home is now reportedly vacant.

LaLaurie Mansion, New Orleans, LA

The LaLaurie Mansion in New Orleans, LA.

Located at 1140 Royal St in New Orleans, Louisiana, the LaLaurie Mansion boasts six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and one horrifying history. Originally built for visiting French royalty, the mansion dates back to the 1800s.

In 1832, Madame Delphine LaLaurie moved into the mansion. Many lavish parties were thrown in the residence, and LaLaurie cemented herself as a member of New Orleans’ elite class. However, rumors and accusations surfaced of LaLaurie’s mistreatment of her slaves.

When a fire broke out at the residence in 1834, firefighters attempting to contain the blaze discovered “seven horribly mutilated slaves who had been imprisoned in the house for some time,” according to Atlas Obscura. An angry mob descended upon the house, destroying as much as they could get their hands on. Madame LaLaurie then fled to Paris, where she lived out the rest of her days.

The house is still featured on many New Orleans ghost tours, as people speculate the souls of the slaves mistreated within its walls still haunt the premises. However, no one is allowed inside as the home is now a private residence.

Zillow now values the property at an estimated $854,321, compared to its $2,100,000 selling price in 2010.

Sallie House, Atchison, KS

Sallie House, Atchison, KS
The Sallie House in Atchison, KS has been investigated by multiple ghost hunters.

According to a post by Visit Atchison, one residence in the small Kansas town has quite the paranormal reputation — and it may be affecting its value. Built around the 1900s, the home served as the place of business for an Atchison physician.

According to legend, a six-year-old girl was brought to the doctor’s office, believed to be experiencing appendicitis. The doctor reportedly began operating on the young girl before the anesthesia took full effect. She died on the operating table, and her spirit allegedly still haunts the house, reportedly causing strange scratches to appear on visitors’ bodies, objects to move, unexplained fires, and cold spots being felt in what used to be the operating room.

The home’s listing on Zillow actually calls attention to the home’s ghostly reputation, saying it “is the internationally known home of Sallie the Heartland ghost,” and that the home has a “record of $400 per night with word of mouth only,” inciting potential owners to actually rent out the house to investigators and fans of the paranormal.

The three-bedroom, two-bath residence is not currently on the market. In February 2016, it was listed for a whopping $1,000,000. By August of that same year, the asking price had lowered to $499,900. In November 2017, the home went off the market.
